Big Bird (The Greystoke Pelican) Video Goes Viral

February 7, 2014

A habituated pelican dubbed “Big Bird” who is resident at one of our favourite lodges in western Tanzania, has become an internet sensation after a camera attached to its beak recorded the view as the bird practiced flying over Lake Tanganyika.

Big Bird is popular with the guests at Greystoke Mahale, a stunning ‘barefoot luxury’ lodge nestled on sandy beaches at the foot of the Mahale Mountains. Her flying antics have been amusing the residents, as she practices her aerial skills, staying low over the shoreline or close to the lodge.

“Flight training commences before breakfast most mornings if wind conditions allow. Even Big Bird knows that taking off with a back wind is foolhardy”, says the management of the lodge.

We hope you enjoy watching Big Bird’s YouTube video, which is making the rounds on the internet and has just been featured in UK newspaper, The Telegraph.

(If you like the view, you just might want to check out our From Plains to Primates tour, which includes four nights at Greystoke – flying pelicans an optional extra!)
