Experience the wild beneath the waves in ZanzibarJanuary 7, 2016
When the World Travel Awards recently announced Zanzibar as the world’s leading dive destination, we could not have been happier! Zanzibar is famous for its paradise-like beaches but what most people don’t realise is that some of the islands most amazing features actually lie beneath the waves.
Although Zanzibar was only recently officially recognised as being the best dive site in the world, it’s been a well-known fact amongst divers for quite some time now. In fact, the island receives the majority of its tourism as a result of the water sports they have to offer. One of the most popular places for diving in Zanzibar is the Mneba Atoll Marine Reserve. This area has an abundance of sealife and seeing lion fish, moray eels, stingrays and turtles swimming around in the shallows.
Many people never even consider trying scuba-diving as they have developed preconceptions around the sport; it’s too difficult, it’s too expensive, it’s too scary e.t.c. e.t.c. However, as the old Aristotle quote goes: “One must learn by doing the thing, for though you think you know it, you have no certainty until you try.”
For one, it’s not nearly as difficult as people consider it to be. An open-water diving course can be completed in 3 days by almost anybody that knows how to swim…and breathe. Most of the time, travellers concerns become moot after the first day out in the water, exploring the ocean, as the experience is one that is absolutely worth it. Within Zanzibar’s turquoise ocean there is a whole new world that you would usually never be exposed to. Seeing as the ocean covers the vast majority of our earth, if your goal is to explore the world then you’ll definitely need to learn to scuba-dive. It’s also probably the most peaceful place on earth and swimming up close with turtles is truly a unique and touching experience.
Of course it’s tempting to just lie on Zanzibar’s beautiful beaches all day sipping cocktails but take it from the travel experts, a scuba-diving experience is one guaranteed to make your trip an unforgettable one!
