Gorilla Highlands – An Ipad Safari

September 21, 2012

We recently met with Studio Edirisa, a talented and inspirational cultural media outfit from southwest Uganda. It’s hard to describe exactly what they do – as their output is so diverse – but everything they do has a real empathy with local culture with some of the most professional design and media products we’ve ever seen.

This short video is a trailer for their latest project – an iPad application called ‘Gorilla Highlands’.

Gorilla Highlands is more than just a guide book. It’s an interactive dive under the skin of local culture, language, wildlife and history, with itinerary recommendations thrown in. The images and videos are dramatic shots, the interactivity is excellent (local phrases and key words can be played as sound clips to guide the user into more in depth interactions with local communities), and the quality of the content is quite simply incredible. Tribal histories that you would find hard to locate in any book are found here.

After Gorilla Highlands is launched, Miha Logar, founder of Edirisa, plans to start on similar interactive guides for the rest of Uganda, using the Apple iPad publishing software and covering all the different regions of the country with their respective wildlife and cultural highlights.

If you want to be more than just a tourist when on safari in Uganda, this is definitely the guide for you. And it will be available to download from the Apple store very soon.
