New Rwanda Safari Lodge Opens Its Doors
January 18, 2013The much-hyped Ruzizi Tented Camp in Akagera National Park in Rwanda is now fully open for business – and it looks like it has been worth the wait!
Located in the only savannah park in Rwanda, this intimate wilderness camp has seven spacious, en-suite tents, all nestled in the riverine forest along the edge of Lake Ihema. In the cool shade of large trees and rustling palms, the camp provides a serene retreat in between game drives and boat cruises in the park.
The camp has a central reception area, with space for socialising in
the bar and dining room, or relaxing on the deck. An enticing boardwalk connects the reception areas to a circular firepit deck, overlooking the lake and an excellent spot for sundowners.
Ruzizi is decorated throughout with a creative interpretation of traditional Rwanda safari style. Imigongo, a traditional geometric art form, hangs on the walls, and much of the furniture has been hand-crafted by local Rwandan artisans and co-operatives. In keeping with its low-impact approach to providing comfort and luxury in the bush, the camp is entirely powered by solar.
The camp provides a wonderful contrast to the rest of the tour, which also takes in cultural activities in Kigali and gorilla trekking in the mist-wreathed mountains of the Virungas.
