“At the beach, life is different. Time doesn’t move hour to hour but mood to moment. We live by the currents, plan by the tides and follow the sun.” – Unknown
Dotted along the east coast of Africa are some very special places to end your safari with. Small, secluded, and superbly styled properties on some of the most stunning beaches in the world lull the senses, offering luxury at a relaxed pace, well honed by centuries of easy-going Swahili culture.
The properties on Vamizi and Quilalea islands in Mozambique, and the Zanzibar archipelago in Tanzania are our favourite locations. They will make you feel like you own your own little patch of paradise, with their lack of routine, delicious seafood cuisine, sublime service and access to the best snorkeling and diving you could wish for.
Options For African Beach Holidays
If you can, it’s usually best to keep the beach portion of your safari for the end. By this time, you’re possibly a little safaried-out and in contrast to the 2-3 nights you’ve been spending at each game lodge, you’re probably looking to kick back and relax in one spot for more than a few nights.
Depending on the time you have available, 4 nights to a week on the beach are typical. Extensions to Vamizi and Quilalea Islands in Mozambique work well for our southern African safaris in Namibia, Botswana and Zambia. If you’re on safari in east Africa, then Zanzibar, Pemba and Mnemba Islands are the logical choice. If you’re looking further afield, then there are direct flights from east and southern Africa direct to Seychelles, only two and a half hours flight away.
Planning And Preparation Required
Minimal to none. You might want to bring along factor 50-60 sunscreen, but everything else you need, you will find when you get here. April and November are months best avoided because of the monsoon rains.
