Reviews about Journeys Discovering Africa

Elsa’s Kopje

overview

Safari Highlights

This elegant boutique safari lodge is located in the uncrowded Meru National Park - far from the bustle of Kenya's package tour industry.

The lodge is named for the orphaned lioness reared by Joy and George Adamson, pioneering conservationists who lived in this area of northern Kenya in the 1950s and 60s. Meru is the place the Adamsons chose to release Elsa, which Joy recounted in her best-selling book, Born Free, and is where the lioness successfully raised three cubs. The book was later turned into an award-winning film of the same name - a must see for anyone planning to visit this captivating area. The lodge was opened in 1999 by Dr Richard Leakey and Virginia McKenna, the latter the star of the film and founder of the 'Born Free' wildlife conservation foundation.

Considered one of the most accomplished and environmentally sensitive lodge designs in Africa, Elsa’s comprises 9 en suite cottages around a granite hill. Each cottage delivers the most incredible views, and blends seamlessly with the natural topography and vegetation of the hillside. Each open-fronted cottage includes a spacious main bedroom, en suite bathroom (some have outdoor baths) and private deck or sitting room. The public areas of the lodge include an infinity rock pool, comfortable lounge and sumptuous dining area. Meals are taken beneath the stars, with a fusion of North Italian recipes with more unusual dishes and use fresh salads and herbs from the lodge garden.
