Joy’s Camp

overview

Safari Highlights

A beautiful oasis in the middle of the arid plains of Shaba Game Reserve, Joy's Camp is built on the site of Joy Adamson's old home - where she once raised Elsa, the lion cub, and became the inspiration for the famous film, Born Free.

Each of the ten spacious Bedouin-style tents has its own private deck overlooking a large natural spring and with views of the surrounding hills. The en suite bathrooms all have cool flagstone floors and are fitted with flush loos and hot running water. Each tent is decorated with handmade glass and the vibrant, traditional fabrics of local nomadic tribes for a uniquely stylish environment.

The classic 'big five' animals can be more easily ticked off in other parks and reserves - Shaba is a little bit unusual and its wildlife is no different. Reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx, Grant's gazelle, Somali ostrich, Grevy's zebra and gerenuk are all possible sightings - rewarding the keen eyes of the serious wildlife enthusiast. Elephant, lion and buffalo still abound, so there are some more familiar names too, many of whom come to drink at the natural spring in front of camp - so you don't even have to stray too far from your tent to enjoy them.
